Test Footage

 Here are the images I have not used in my music magazine and why I have not used them and what I might of used them for in my magazine.

This image was taken for the section that was going to be about how to DJ in my magazine, although I like this image and it can be seen as slightly different, I wasn't sure on its worthiness on my contents page.
The cartoon image on the vinyl did not link to my magazine and so this is why I have left this image.

These two images I both really like and if I was doing an article on the how to DJ section I would definitely used these images, but I didn't have enough room and found an image I thought worked more for my contents page.

This image of my model Polly was a test shot, to give me a variety of ideas of who I might want to make out that her music type was. I have put her as an artist in a group called Passion In America, but with this image I could of made her out to be a DJ of some sort. So having this image just gave me variety.

I like this image and think the almost action shot style you get is really effective when thinking about the DJ section of my magazine. If I used this photo in my magazine I would of cropped into the hand action more and cut out the dodgy background that makes it look unprofessional as it is taken in a classroom.

 These three images of the DJ decks I really like. I like the close up shots so you can see the little details on the buttons you press. I took a few of these types of images as having the DJ decks out was a rare opportunity and I wanted to take advantage of it. I have included in my contents page a decks button image so felt I did not need to double image effect on my contents page.

On the left is an image of my model Brad. I decided not to sure this image as I thought it did not look professional enough. With half of his head cut off I just did not think it made the cut. On the right is an image of my model Scott. I decided not to use this image as the main feature (the headphones) were not on show enough and it looked too casual for a model DJ image. I used another image of Scott on my contents page where the headphones were the main feature of the image to show the indication to music.

On the left and right is another image of my model Polly. Starting with the left image, I like the image as she looks as if she is actually signing and she looks very natural, but I thought it looked too like a 'school proformance' than singing in front of a crowd of millions. So I left the image as test footage and learn about how I wanted her to look and the type of vibe/effect the image gave off. The image on the right i preferred and thought it looked very different and the colours on the face were perfect with half green and half red but unfortunately the imaged was blurred and so was left for test footage. But after taking many more I came across the imaged I wanted to use in my magazine that I thought were perfect and felt I had personally developed in my idea of taking an image and how I wanted the image to look like.

  To the left are my two models Polly and Amy, both in the same kind of style and pose. From these photos I wanted to create the idea that they were singing in front of millions of people. Polly's image is again very natural and relaxed so I felt I didn't get the pop star effect so I left that as test footage that maybe later on I could play around with. The image of Amy I really liked, and I was stuck between this image and the image I actually used on my contents page. I played around with this image a bit and emphasised the lighting around her body, but in the end I chose the other image so I could play around with the background more and create the idea of a concert image for a review article on it for my contents page.

Here are all my other images that I have taken for testing on my magazine, I have either not felt they are professional enough to be put in my magazine or they were just not needed for other images have been used or that they were just tests of the image itself to help with my improvements when continuing to take the images.
When taking images for your magazine the one thing you need to focus on is just taking as many images as you can, take a large amount of images and taking a variety of shots means that when it comes to looking through your images you have more to work with and you can afford to delete images now and then if you feel they just aren't up to the standard. You can then edit and play around with the images you feel are useful to you and you wont need to go out again and gather everything together to get some more images all over again, it is just too much hassle.  

TITLES

Titles are important on a magazine and a good variety of interesting titles is good to have in your magazine. I have tried to do this and have included these titles for my contents and front cover pages.
First I looked at titles for my contents title, I found this hard because you have to make sure it connected to your front cover as well as fitting well on the page but making it still look attractive.

My final choice for my contents title was this one, but I edited the background and colour to it to make it stand out on the page more. 

Then I looked at titles for my Featured title that would be on my contents page indicating the section where what was in the magazine would be seen.

I found choosing this title slightly easier as it was just a tiny feature on the contents page and could be an easy and simple text that everyone could find easy to read.

Then I had to find titles for the odd titles. I found a title for my made up band easily and found it a simple but slightly more girly title as the bands main singer was a girl it showed the femininity of the band. 

Then found the title that would indicate the section of information for where you could contact the magazine or follow the magazine online such as facebook and twitter.

Then I thought that to make my genre a little more obvious I would add an extra title to the end of my NEWSOUND name. Adding TOP40 UK indicates that the magazine is in connection with the UK TOP40 charts, which is a high indication to modern music, so that my audience know what kind of magazine they are about to buy.

This is my TOP40UK title that is situated at the end just under my NewSound title.

So as you can see I have tried to have a variety of different fonts, to make my magazine visually interesting.

Here I have tried to show the variety of titles I looked at before choosing the title I felt was right for my magazine and right for the image I am trying to create for my magazine and the genre. Texts are a key factor of a magazine it magazine is print and print is texts. Having interesting and a variety of different texts means that my readers are continuously interested. But I have included too many different texts as the recommended is around 3-4 different styles of texts, this means that you don't lose the image of your magazine by having too many different styles taking over the magazine and its style. A certain text style can be associated with a magazine, so keeping with the styles can help the audience remember the magazine.

Editing and experimenting with Photoshop

I am beginning to think of what I would like for a front cover and the type of image I would like to use. I have taken a few photos and have edited them using photo shop and have made duplicates to make many different edits of the same image, therefore giving me a wide range of different ideas.

Here you can see I have taken a photo and edited it on photo shop, taking away the colour and only leaving her main features (eyes and mouth) with colour. I think this effect is really different and highlights the image and makes it stand out. Also, it being 'different' makes it seem 'new' this could link to my title being 'NewSound'. While taking my images I am continuously thinking of new ideas for my magazine and so thing may change such as my target audience as this may be seen to connect more with females (having a female as the cover). But this is only a draft idea of what I would like to be a front cover. As the last shot I have cropped a close up to her face which make it more clear it is a main image.

After editing and playing around with the image I have decided to draft a front cover just to see what it would look like. This is what came out. I have done two as I have been inspired by Ray Gun magazine. Ray Gun breaks all the rules of formal magazine layout. His titles are not in place and covered or parts slightly missing of the page, his words are covering his image and his cover can be seen as art. So on the left you see my titles slightly tipped to seem quirky and on the right, the title actually covering the eye. The right image is more of a Ray Gun image and so if I want to have a subtle influence from Ray Gun I think I should use the left image being abit more of a subtle rule break of the title not being straight.

 The biggest image of my edits is the one I would be more entitled to use for my magazine cover as the dark edit and bright colour is modern and stands out. As well as this the image is still quirky and interesting but not breaking the rules too much to not be seen as a actual music magazine.

I have shown here my influence of the edit I have done on the image that I wish to use for my front cover. Also I have shown my talent on how to work on photoshop and showed my ability to take a image, edit it and change it into something different that would work with my magazine and create an image that I feel has enough to be on my front cover. It is very out-there as the image is a close up face shot and it is also unique with the edit I have done on it, creating the black and white layout and highlight key features of her face.
Working and experimenting with images can lead into edits and effecting being found that is only found by experimenting and playing round with the images taken. Once I found the style that I liked on the image, I was then able to start placing it as my front cover to see how it would look like therefore leading me onto drafting and always progressing to get to my final product.

Experimenting with Magazine

Before creating my practice magazine cover i designed a template that would give me a brief and simple idea of what i was targeting. Although the layout is not the same and my real cover came out with images the different side and information in a different way the template gave me confidence in what I was trying to create when doing this task. My goal was to create a newspaper styled cover that included images and an interesting story such as 'The Next Einstein'.

I am pleased with my over all outcome of my practice newspaper cover and doing this practice gives me for confidence when I go to final create my very own magazine that will be on Modern music and the charts.  

Here you can see a close up image of the title was I was targeting for my newspaper, TavyTown Weekly. My title was a confident feature I keep the same on my template and real magazine cover. I chose to name my newspaper this as it connected to the location in which the magazine would be sold, the location being Tavistock College. It saying 'Weekly' suggest the magazine will be printed and sold weekly. I also find it a catchy and memorable title that I feel students would like. I find it important to have a visual aid with you almost when creating a magazine, it is just a little guide that will help you out with the basic gist of how you would like your magazine to turn out like. So as you can see my basic note page is very rough with no detail, this is only so that I can see where I would like to see images and writing and the type of layout and look I want to create. This is helpful and yet very simple.
